A Faith Community that Reaches Out From the Heart - of Summit County DILLON, COLORADO HOME An oral reading of  The Gospel of Mark Read by Deborah Hage The stories and teachings about Jesus in the New Testament gospels were originally passed on through oral tradtion.  They were not written down until several decades after Jesus.  They existed in the emerging Jesus communites in an oral form.  Over time stories and teachings of Jesus began coalescing into groupings, and no single community possessed all of the stories.  Different stories and traditions lived on in, and were edited by, different emerging Jesus communities. Even a quick reading of the gospels reveals they are different.  Each gospel is unique. Many stories differ from one another in significant ways, and some stories are told in only one or two of the gospels.  Each gospel presents a unique portrait of Jesus as he meant something a little different to each community of faith.  This liturgical year (2012) is the Year of Mark.   The vast majority of our Sunday gospel readings will be read from Mark's gospel through next November.   Most biblical scholars agree that Mark was the first gospel written sometime in the late 60's of the first century near or at the time of the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple by the Romans.   It was written as anti-imperial good news that Jesus is Lord - not Caesar.  Mark's primary message is that Jesus came proclaiming and embodying the Kingdom of God, which is what the world would look and be like if God was on the throne and not Caesar.   Jesus' life and ministry, according to Mark, is what the Kingdom of God is like and about in the world.
