a cELTIC cELEBRATION OF CHRISTMAS pRESENTED BY lotm CHOIR
The joy and hope of this beautiful season are celebrated in this Celtic-styled cantata, performed by the Sanctuary Choir at Lord of the Mountains Lutheran Church at
5 p.m. Sunday. Admission to this event is free and children of all ages are welcome. Leonard Rhodes will direct the choir from the piano, with Bill Kyrioglou playing flutes. There will be a reception following the cantata.

A jubilant work, Tapestry of Light is lush with Celtic harmonies and filled with tuneful carols, primarily from the British Isles. The thoughtful narration and familiar tunes underscore the uplifting theme of this work. Some of the more recognizable melodies are; “I Saw Three Ships,” “Sussex Carol,” Scarborough Fair,” “Greensleeves,” “Londonderry Air,” some of which are not necessarily associated in our minds with Christmas.

The author of this cantata, Joseph M. Martin, was inspired by trips to Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England to create a work celebrating the rich heritage of seasonal song that is part of this great tradition. In his foreword to this work, Martin reminds us: “The music of Christmas is a treasure for both the ear and the heart. Each winter it covers our lives with a hopeful blanket of sound and reminds us that even in the silence of winter, there is song. From angelic acclamations to delicate lullabies, the message finds a home in the tender places of our hearts.”

Rhodes, director of music, choir master and organist at Lord of the Mountains also is the artistic director of Summit Music and Arts. Rhodes is a highly recognized composer and arranger. He recently completed a very successful run in Portland, Oregon on the show “One Night With Janis Joplin” which will begin a U.S. tour next year. He is also working on a show in Calgary, Alberta in April 2012 featuring the music of the Lovin' Spoonful, and the Mamas and the Papas. His career has spanned over 40 years and he has performed throughout the world. Rhodes is also the founder and director of Pikes Peak Young Composers, an internationally renowned nonprofit organization supporting the work of young composers; based here in Summit County.
